There are two books that come to mind when I think of using visualization in my room.

The language and the illustrations in both books are so vivid and really jump off the page. The Storm Book is probably my favorite because you can read a page to them and then the next page is the picture. It’s a great way to discuss if their visualization matches the pictures. You can talk about what they thought the picture would look like vs. what the illustration actually shows. The book has different settings which adds another layer to the conversation.

One of my favorite activities to do is to read Owl Moon to my students and then let them create their own images. I don’t show them any of the pictures the first time I read the book. We stop at different parts of the book so they can draw their visualizations for the beginning, middle and end. Then, we go back and either watch it on YouTube or I re-read it and they compare their pictures to the illustrations in the book.

If you would like to try it with your students, just click on the image below and you can down-load it for free.
