Tally Time and Busy Week

I need at least 45 hours in a day to accomplish everything that I want. I have been totally MIA over here this week. I feel like I have some splainin’ to do…

We’ve had a crazy busy week from Field Trips to everything pumpkin. I also got a chance to hang out with my friend Cara this week. It’s bizarre how blogging has blessed me with some really wonderful friendships.

Here’s a little week in review in pictures.

I have kind of been meaning to introduce Tally Marks since…like a month ago.

Yikes.

Here are the ways that I like to introduce Tally Marks.

This is a great book that I read every year. You can get it for $5ish on Amazon. After we read the book, we create our own tally page. I do this activity with them since I typically read it towards the beginning of introducing the concept.

There is also an excellent BrainPop video that you can show for free.

I created a unit to go along with Tally Marks. I am always needing to reinforce this skill throughout the year. There are various activities that you can use with students that are on various levels. If students are struggling with the concept, use number cards 1-5 in a small group and help students build smaller numbers. I like using coffee stirrers, but popsicle sticks would work just as well.

Some students really grasp it from the beginning and are able to run with it. A big standard in Kindergarten is being able to see ten and some ones. I really try to keep this in the back of my mind when I’m talking about number sense and helping kids to see numbers in different ways.

There are also practice pages where students have to order tally marks, match up the tally marks to the ten frames, roll a dice and represent the number as a tally, ten frame, and number.

I plan on coming back to the tally mark well throughout the year. Don’t leave without entering to win a copy of Tally O’ Malley and my newest unit.

  1. grade cards and preparing for conferences are my weekend plans.

  2. How did you have students complete the field trip paper? We’re going to the farm/pumpkin patch this coming week and I would love to use it My students won’t write anything if they don’t have the words in front of them. They want me to write it for them and they copy it. Some of my class needs that as they are not picking up on. How do you get the capable students to write on their own?

This unit looks amazing! We had a crazy busy weekend! Me and my daughter really got into the Halloween mood this weekend. Friday was Trunk or Treat, Saturday was “Fright on Franklin” where we got to trick or treat at local business downtown and today was trick or treating at out local University. I think we have enough candy to last us a year but we will still be going out Friday night 🙂
