Spaces vs. spacemen

So, let me preface with the fact that I don’t usually like posters like this. I thought for sure my kids would start drawing little meatballs after every word. I used this poster to go along with the Lucy Caulkins “spacing words” mini-lesson. If you use something like this, I would reinforce to the kids that the punctuation only goes at the end. For the past few years, I have been using “spacemen”. As cute as they are, they are a distraction during writer’s work-shop. I thought I would try something different this year. Teaching students to space their words early on makes their writing much easier to read!

That is an adorable idea. How did the kids do with it? I would have the same worry as you…that my kiddos would draw meatballs between each word!
