High/Low Linky…and a Fairy Tale Freebie

Is the beach cold? The answer is, yep.
Did you lay out anyways? The answer is, yep.
Remember? I have a goal of coming back with tan feet. I may have a towel over my legs but my feet are getting tan in the meantime. If I could demand a do-over of Spring Break, I would.
BRRRRRRRR!!!!!!
One of my lovely friends, Katie, has a high/low linky party each month. She is a fabulous blogger and one that has reached out to me since I began blogging and I just love her!
Check out her blog and her high/low linky party and link up with her 🙂

So even though it’s cold, at least I’m not doing my taxes 🙂 Or much of anything for that matter!
Now on to the freebie. This idea was given to me by a friend of mine that is working on her Master’s in Literacy and it is research based. It really gets the students thinking about the characters on a deeper level. I love doing it with Goldilocks because at the beginning of the lesson, the students always say she is the “good” character because of what she looks like. Then we do the inside/outside traits of her and they immediately change their minds. I let the kids take them home so I don’t have a kid’s example, but here are some of the words they came up with (all on their own 🙂
I also like talking to the kids about their character and even though they or someone else might look a certain way, it doesn’t mean that it’s their heart. I have kids with special needs in my room this year so I feel like this really great literacy discussion resonated with them in a different way. It was very powerful and I felt like I needed to share it! We did this with Little Red Riding Hood and Jack. All three are free and are great for discussion. Even though re-telling and predicting are great comprehension skills, it’s nice to do something a little different 🙂 After we talked about Goldilocks, we did the same thing for Little Red Riding Hood the next day and we compared the two characters.
I hope that you enjoy these freebies.
Leave a post and let me know what other kinds of reading activities you do with your kiddos!
Stay warm!

  1. What a super idea! You are right. It is nice to take things into other directions now and then and to really have the kiddos look at all possible angles in a book. Thanks for shaing!

  11. Ohmyword, I LOVE those freebies and the idea of looking not only on the outside, but the heart of the characters, too! This could be such an awesome lesson to help students think about the characters and also tie into teaching a lesson on accepting others. Thank you!
