I know that is something that every K classroom probably does from here to China, but I don’t care…I love it.
Do you read this book around this time of the year?
So stinkin’ cute. I read it on Monday the week of Halloween because it’s my fave.
It’s all about me of course…
This is the best “Halloween” book. Even though we aren’t supposed to really talk about Halloween. I’m guessing that we can just talk about skeletons, bats, spiders, pumpkins and those brilliant Kindergartners can use their inferring skills. That’s how we get around holidays…talk about everything that surrounds it without actually mentioning the word. We have to tiptoe around goblins and witches.
Even though Room on the Broom doesn’t say witch…hmm.
I took this picture forever ago and it has been making the rounds on Pinterest. The kids always have interesting placement for the Q-Tips… This photo is G rated but I am sure I will have some not so G photos once we do these this year.
I try not to model for them too much because I like their creativity to guide them. Typically, it turns in to a big glue-y non-drying mess that doesn’t dry until Halloween.
I joke when I say I do this because I’m so excited about the book…I’m really waiting on the glue to dry.
I give the students black paper and Q-Tips that are full and cut in half. We talk some about placement and I put my example on the board for them if they want a guide. I can take a picture of the head with my document camera if you are really artistically challenged but I think that most of you can swing that? I also found a skeleton head printable that you could use.
Here is the writing extension we do as well. They always have the most bizarre ways to get rid of hiccups. Drinking water is just so old school now. I always share that I eat peanut butter to make my hiccups go away. You can be sure that 19 out of 19 kids will have peanut butter as one of their ways to get rid of hiccups so that is why I have added the second box.
IF the peanut butter doesn’t work then what would you do…
Make sure to watch this skeleton dance on YouTube either as your opening hook or to wrap up the lesson. Here is theĀ Skeleton Dance.
And last but not least, Jodi (#3 comment), won the Pumpkin Life Cycle Unit. However, I need your e-mail Jodi! E-mail me or leave me a comment so I can get it to you!
I LOVE Skeleton Hiccups! I read it each year, too. That video is cute…definitely going to add it to my plans. Thanks for sharing!
We read this again today. Love this book!!!!!
