Science Tools Freebie

I am typing this post with a bit of reluctance.

One of our standards and “I Can” statemets is about using science tools. Some of the tools that it states is mirros (?), magnifying glasses, magnets, thermometers, balances and scales and units of measure. I can read to them about science tools all day long. However, unless they get their hands on it, it’s meaningless to them.

They used a mirror in art class at the beginning of the year to draw a self-portrait so I am just going to check that one off for now…

I came up with a few activities in my new science unit for some engaging, hands-on, meaningful lessons with some of the tools I mentioned. My favorite one is the magnifying activity called “Magnifying Match“. I bought the cheapo magnifying glasses from the dollar store. You can find a set of them on Amazon or, I’m sure, down some aisle at Target. I don’t really know, but the more reasons to go to Target the better.

Today, we are going to read about the tools and then on Wednesday my teaching partner and I are going to be rotating around two different classrooms doing the different activities.

We did our Jan Brett study last week and the kiddos love to draw along with Jan Brett. She has some great videos up on her web-site and on YouTube where she does step-by-step drawings of some of her characters. I am not even going to pretend that my illustration I did was as good as one of my students…
