Behavior Picture Books

Everyone is starting to think “Back to School” and with that comes a whole new set of kiddos to learn the routines. You know how it goes as a K teacher…it’s like herding cats for those first few weeks. I also feel like I stand at the front of the room and give them a whole big list of things that they can NOT do.

I presented about behavior and management and I think one of the most effective ways to talk to students about rules is through books. That’s my language at least.

Here are my favorites.

There are a few in here that I haven’t read before and I’m going to be adding to the list this year. I think that constant reminding is the best way to help kiddos remember what our expectations are. Something I always say is make sure that you help students know the difference between a procedure and a rule. I (and it’s actually school-wide now) only have four rules. I’ve adapted them so that they all have a positive twist and they are all encompassing.

Part of my back to school routine is introducing the rules through picture books and then having discussions with the kids about the rules. One of my favorite books to read is Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse. Typically, it’s one of the books I read after I have introduced all of the rules. Then, the students illustrate a picture of them following their favorite rule.

This is part of my K Back Pack unit. I live for this unit because it gives me everything I need for the first few (hectic) weeks of school!
