It’s finally Fall Break and before I head out to the beach {don’t hate me}…I posted up my new unit for math tubs. We do math tubs in my room but you might do centers or stations.
Whatever you call it…I needed some fresh activities for my math tubs. I do math rotations so that I can meet with leveled math groups and/or work with students one on one. I try to find/put together activities that they can do independently, but they aren’t all “WHAT DO I DO!?!” while I’m trying to work with a small group.
All kinder and first grade teachers know the struggle is real.
You don’t have to use the colored pumpkins, but I like for students to be able to order the numbers from 10-100 and see it all laid out in front of them. Then, they use the recording page to cut and glue the missing numbers.
You do have a differentiated dice, right? It makes life SO much easier. We are working on subitizing. Don’t know what that means? I didn’t either until last year. It means that students can rapidly and accurately look at a number or number set and know it without having to count. I want to roll the dice and be able to look at the set and quickly color it on their page. There is one for apples and one for pumpkins because I can’t get enough of either 🙂
This activity is from my Pumpkins, Apples and Leaves Oh My! Unit but I thought I would include a visual. There is an apple ordering activity in Apple and Pumpkin Math that is exactly the same. Ordering numbers and working on correct number formation just doesn’t ever get old.
I have been working on numbers 11-20 for the past two weeks with my kiddos. For Apple Comparisons, students have to identify the basket that is the larger number. I like to laminate the cards and let students use an expo marker to circle the basket with the larger quantity. Once they do that, they find the corresponding letter on the recording page and write the teen number.
At first, I wasn’t going to post these pumpkin cards around the room. My main focus for this tub was for students to count scattered sets. You can really post any of the activities up if you want and make the activity meet the needs of your students. If you think it would take them too long, just put the cards in with the recording page. Again, students have to match the set to the corresponding letter that spells out “pumpkin”.
There you have it 🙂 I’m off to the beach.

Yes! We get a fall break!!
I like doing creative math with my students and we sometimes team with a friend who teaches K. We are doing the Line Up, Attributes, and Circumference activities from the Pumpkins page at http://monthbymonth.scholastic.com/teach.html. So far all the kids are enjoying it and building their math vocabularies and increasing their knowledge of concepts like greater/lesser and weight/size.
Happy to be off today!
