Apples…everywhere.
Literately, we read 10 Apples Up On Top earlier today and they cut out apples to stack on top of their pictures. I have been picking up apple bits and pieces since school ended. The life of a Kindergarten teacher…
Even if I am picking up apple remnants all over the room, I love apple week.
One of my favorite books to read is The Apple Pie Tree.
After we read the book, we had a little apple taste test at snack. Yesterday, they all got to try the three different types of apples and we voted and graphed their favorite kinds.
Today, we got to try some of the yummy things that are made with apples.
The cupcakes were supposed to be muffins, but we ended up with apple/vanilla cupcakes. It’s all good…I’m flexible. They ate them at the end of the day so I’m sure the sugar high hit them on the bus. Only kidding 🙂 They were tiny and everyone mostly just got enough to taste.
We tried apple pie, apple sauce, apple juice, and apple “muffins” that were actually just vanilla cupcakes dressed as apple.
After we tasted, we did our first opinion writing.
First, they had to color their favorite item…go figure that cupcake got quite a few votes.
Then they had to write their “because”. I released a lot of the writing to them today. I tried not to stand over them and help them sound out each individual sound. I really tried to step back and let them write the sounds they hear. We’ve been practicing in Writer’s Workshop and I think that they are beginning to feel more confident with their ability to sound out words they are trying to write.
Maybe you can have some apple food fun and opinion writing as well this week. Here is the activity. Just click here or on the picture to grab it for free.
