Hopefully you wore your blue today to support autism!
I have my own set of kiddos this year and it has been a life changing experience for me. I have learned so much patience this year. I have also learned how to laugh at things that would have normally bothered me. I was in tears the first week of school because I just really didn’t know what I was doing. Now tear up thinking about them leaving my classroom and moving on to first grade.
I didn’t actually talk to my kids about autism today because I’m not 100% sure it’s appropriate to talk to 5-6 year old kids about it. I wore my blue shirt and gave them lots of hugs. Odd Velvet is a wonderful book to read when you have students that are just a little different or have special needs.
Kindergarten hearts are the sweetest and they usually know when there is someone in the class that is a little different and they embrace them in ways that have touched my heart on a daily basis. My aide and I have cried happy tears (there’s a theme this year with tears:) together over the words that have been exchanged between all the students this year. Kids reaching out on their own to give a hug or zip a jacket when it becomes difficult and frustrating. It has been such a wonderful year and I am truly blessed beyond belief that God picked me to be their teacher this year.

It will be sad when they move on but know you have done an amazing job with them and they are ready! I tear up thinking about those precious little ones who are a little different. Young children are usually so accepting. I wish we could bottle that up and sprinkle it on them when they forget that. I am going to have to check out that book. Is it one that will make me cry as I am reading to the kids?

I don’t think I cried with that book. I always cry when I read A House For Hermit Crab…which is absolutely ridiculous because I make up my own metaphor for the book about them “growing out of their Kindergarten shell”. Glad to know I’m not the only one that tears up when reading picture books 🙂
Okay, now I am in tears reading this post! That was so sweet and I could not agree with you more! Things that may have bothered me before, now I can laugh at and appreciate the kindness that goes on between all of my different children. Thanks for this post!
