Kindergarten Assessment Time

It’s that time of the year!

We are testing your kiddos to see if you have been doing anything with them all summer :-p

I kid. I kid.

Really, we do have to come up with some sort of assessment to put in place where we can determine a student’s knowledge of some of the core skills that we teach. These are {some} foundational skills that are introduced at the beginning of the year and we build on them throughout the entire year.

This is an idea of what each table might look like depending on the skill they are assessing.

Some of the skills that we test on are:

-one to one correspondence

-counting to 100

-number recognition

-rhyming words

-letter recongition (upper and lower)

-syllables

-sight words

-reading level

After we test, we score the test and give it a number. Based on the year, we make a decision of how we are going to group the students based on ability. We try to get a good mix of kids so we can form groups and differentiate.

This is what the student is looking at while we are testing them.

Here is what you see from your side.

You want to keep the score sheet and notes on your side. Most kids are already nervous about starting school and answering all of these questions, so we try to make it as stress free as we can.

We have the room set up in rotations so the student moves from one teacher to the next. We don’t have our class lists yet. This way, the students can see everyone and meet all of the teachers while they move around the room.

It always helps to have a smelly marker on hand for a coversational piece when you have a REALLY shy kid. What kid can resist a smelly marker?

I haven’t met one yet.

If you need a quick assessment for your incoming Kinders, here is what we use. It’s quick and easy. The only thing that I don’t include is a reading level gauge.

We use DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) to test our students. If you don’t test reading levels, then may I suggest you speak to your literacy coach or reading specialist about getting some sort of system in place…like asap.

This will be on sale until Saturday…happy testing 🙂

  1. Have you started school yet or is this done before you start? We have always waited a couple of weeks so the kids would be familiar with us before we have them come in one day for our state’s readiness assessment. The state has now changed it so now most of it is class observations done over a month’s time. We also have other assessments we have to give before the end of September.

  2. I used to teach K so I get the assesment part. Isn’t it mind-numbing when a child can actually count to 100 but they do it slowly? But some of them are also so adorable and keen to be there. Good luck with this year.
