It’s been a weather filled week in our classroom this week. What better way to start off a weather unit than thunder cake!?
Yes, we ate thunder cake yesterday. I The kids were licking the plate. Not kidding.

I can’t take any credit for the cake. A parent made it for us. I wish every unit was started with cake! I have a feeling my effectiveness would skyrocket 🙂
We did a lot of chatting yesterday about storms and a lot about storm safety. We read these two books:
I love this book by Charlotte Zolotow because it reads like poetry and the visualizing piece is so powerful in this book. The illustrations aren’t shown until after you read part of the book. I always talk about how illustrations can tell a story without any words. It allows students to make their own visualization before seeing what the illustrator drew. It’s awesome 🙂

Then today, we talked all about clouds. We had a guest speaker from the sever weather news channel come and speak to the Kindergartners. All 100 of them…in my room. HA!
Guest speakers are the best…I love how Kinders can just ask them the most ridiculous questions and the reaction of the guest speaker is always so funny. Examples:
“How can you make a tornado?”
“This one time a big tornado swept over a car and an entire house, dude.”
“You told us not to go under a tree in a storm and in to a house, but what about a tree house?”
Another part of our cloud study today was reading Little Cloud by Eric Carle. Such a sweet book. I am so looking forward to our author study we are going to do in the next couple of weeks (even if there is no cake involved).
Then, we did this writing activity and I let the students paint their picture on a piece of blue paper with white paint. Then they glued it to the paper. They turned out great!

I love their questions! Kinder kids are so funny! That cake looks amazing! I wish we could have homemade food in the classroom! It is county policy that because of allergies that all food has to come pre packaged so we can read the labels before. Look like you are having a fun week!
