Weather Study with Kinders {freebie} & TpT Conference

Morning! Hope everyone is enjoying their Spring Break {if you are on it like  me}!

We are headed out in the a.m. for a little R&R in the sand and sun. I am counting down the seconds until we take off at 6:30 a.m. I am actually looking forward to waking up at the crack of dawn because it means I will be warm at some point in the day. Needless to say, blogging and beach are not two topics that I would overlap in a Venn so I won’t be blogging much while my booty is planted in the sand. I haven’t been warm since September, so I am really looking forward to it.

Speaking of weather…

We are going to start our study of weather when we get back from Spring Break. It is one of my most favorite things to study because you can tie in literacy, math and science so well with this topic. One of the books we always read is In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb. 61CGIS9sYSL._SX258_BO1,204,203,200_

We then brainstorm ways that weather can be like a lion (fierce, strong, wild) or like a lamb (gentle, calm, mild on chart paper. Spring is usually the best time to talk about weather because there are so many different kinds of weather we experience in the Spring. I am sure that everyone will have a lot to discuss once they start talking about weather because it has been such a crazy winter all across the country!

I have a poem and a response page freebie for you today that is going to be part of my “Weather for Little Kids” pack that I am working on right now. It probably won’t be done until sometime next week, so I thought I would give you a little “preview freebie“.

At some point, you can be on the look-out for my weather creation. I can’t give you a specific day because I have beach brain right now.

Since I am still in the midst of creating this, what types of things would you like to see in a weather packet for kinders/first graders? What skills, books, and/or topics do you cover but you don’t feel like you have ample resources to cover it?

Leave me a comment and you might (I’ll pick three people) just get a copy of this packet in your e-mail when I’m finished! Slide1

Also, I think I have announced everywhere except for here that I am going to be presenting this summer at the TpT conference (in Vegas!!!) on a panel with some of my best bloggy buds. When I went to Blogher last summer, the panels seemed to be the most interesting and well attended sessions I went to. I got the most out of these sessions because we were able to interact with the presenters and we got specific questions answered. Deedee, Greg, Cara, Erica and I will be sitting on a panel to answer your questions about blogging!

Excited does not even come close to how pumped I am about this conference!

  1. Let’s see… One thing I’d definitely like to see are vocabulary cards and an activity (whether it be part of an interactive notebook entry or station sheet.) Weather activities are always fun! Good luck and I hope you have fun at the beach!
    Thanks,
    Andi

  2. I’d like some weather picture sorts, e.g. what do we wear (clothing) and/or carry (gear) on a sunny day, rainy day, snowy day, etc.

  3. We are using ReadyGen and it has a Weather Unit.. I would love to see you incorporate the book, What Will the Weather Be? another book is Weather Words. Please Talk about meteorologist, the tools and water cycle.. If you can weather graph and prediction. Vocabulary cards will be a great help too.

    Thanks

Hi Elizabeth!!! I would really like to see more activities about natural disasters!! I find that my students are always extremely fascinated by this topic, but it is REALLY hard to find non-fiction material directed towards young learners. This is a fabulous giveaway!! Thank you so much for your incredible generosity, and for considering me =). leafsgirl@rogers.com.

This looks like it will be a great unit! I would love to see activities that are related to specific stories. It’s so easy to find center activities but when it comes to whole group reading, there is just not as many activities out there. I can’t wait to see this unit!!!

I’d love to see something with close reading for Kinders about weather. I teach it at the end of the year and I’d love to introduce some close reading with my kids around that time. 🙂

I’d love to see some math tie-ins…maybe place value through 20 and addition facts 0-5! I love the lion/lamb song and writing activity! Thank you for sharing!

  8. I would love to win this for my kiddos!!! They love anything weather related and every year I think about expanding our length of focus on weather. Thanks for the chance!!

  9. Pocket chart activities — maybe using names of the seasons as headers and then sorting vocabulary, clothing, types of wether into each of the seasons. This could be tweaked based on where you live and what weather you experience. Thanks for the chance to win this, Elizabeth!!

  10. Congrats on being a presenter at the TpT conference! That is too cool! Have a great time on vacay!
