Just a quick post tonight about a great book and reader’s work-shop lesson that is so powerful!
Today, we talked about how readers read everywhere. I asked the students to think about places that they see people reading. They came up with bed, with their mom, outside, in an airport, at the beach, with their dog, at the library, and reading on the back porch as the sun sets (not kidding…sometimes I wonder about those little brains 🙂

I love the idea (not mine) of the students visualizing their favorite reading spot and illustrating it. This poster goes up and stays up for the entire year as a reminder that we (and all readers) can read anytime and anywhere. Now that we have been writing a little bit, they are labeling their pictures and adding a little more detail. In the past, I have done this lesson at the beginning of the year and around Christmas they always want to re-do their pictures because we haven’t talked about adding details and labels. This time, I waited a little longer before I did this lesson so they are satisfied with their illustrations :0)
Another teacher on my team had this book, and I just had to go straight on Amazon to buy it. The story is about a little boy who just wants to read a book and can’t find a comfy place to read. He ends up having to move to different spots until he finds his perfect reading spot.

The kiddos loved the book. Right now, my main goal during Reader’s Work-shop is to in-still a love for reading and reading anytime and anywhere. It’s a great 10-15 minute lesson that will stick with them! I also whipped out the craft scissors which really got them pumped up.
