3-D Shape Hunt {Freebie}

Oh hi.

I’ve been a little absent this week from the blog. There have been other things a little more pressing to take care of so I wanted to make sure that when I did post, it would be something worth while. I’ve had so many things I wanted to share and just not enough hours in the day to get over here!

I have been using Deedee and Deanna’s Guiding Kinders Math units and I. am. in. love. I am such a work-shop oriented teacher. I love that this unit is built on the framework. It scaffolds and just makes sense to the kids and for me as a teacher.

So this week…all about solid shapes. You can’t teach solid shapes without Harry Kindergarten. Well, I mean you can…but you shouldn’t.

Yesterday was our last day to talk about solid shapes.

I had the kids bring in small 3-D shapes from home.

They got all of their objects and then sorted them around the room.

There are a few reasons that I like doing this activity each year. First of all, math becomes a part of their world at home. They have to notice these shapes in their surroundings and not just at school. Secondly, it allows for a lot of math talk once we sort. I talk about sliding, stacking and rolling. We talk about sides and faces of solid shapes. We observe how the objects are alike and different.

 And lastly, it gets them up and moving. If you have read a blog post of mine before, you know there isn’t a lot of sitting around happening in my classroom.

I used to have them do a check-list with this activity for the slide, stack, and roll. Then I noticed that they weren’t as focused on the “math talk”, so this year we just walked around and observed. I liked that better.

I’m sure you have a lot of other ideas of how this activity could be helpful for you in your room!

This is what I sent home on Monday. Feel free to grab it if you think it is an activity you would like to do too!

Happy Weekend!
