Making Fonts!

You would think it’s Christmas in my room this week. I have shown my kids how to make their own font and they have gone bananas for it.

Who knew?

In my own attempt to create my own fonts, I think I have created little font making monsters in my room. Today during free choice (boo..indoor recess) they were all hovering around the iPads trying to up-date their font. I think I might have found my handwriting fix!

I have two iPads in my classroom so I have made it their handwriting literacy station. There is a great Handwriting Without Tears App that we have been using. Who wants to do all that work without something to show for it? When their font is complete and up to par, I told them I would download it to the computer and e-mail it home so they have their very own font.

Like I said, I have two iPads so we have to make it work during literacy stations. I know there are some of you out there that don’t have iPads (tear) and some of you have 1:1 iPads (brats) for students. This is just how it works for me.

Students open the app and name their font using their first name. After that, they choose what type of font they want to style their letters after. Then, they proceed to laboriously pour over the formation of every single letter until it looks perfect to them. I had one kid take 30 minutes just on the “A”. fontAnother K teacher that I work with might be just as obsessed with this app as my kids are. Her own children have been sitting side by side on the couch for the past four nights making their own fonts. Her little one finally got one on the computer. miles

It is so easy and a great way to incentivize your students to take time with their writing and to form letters correctly. Once the student saves their font, I go back and look through it to see if it’s worthy of being up-loaded. We talk about making the letters even and neat. If I am not in the middle of a reading group, I have been walking by just to watch them form their letters with some prompting about formation.

Who needs Zaner-Bloser when you got apps?

I know what we will be trying next week. I love this and can’t wait to try it. Thank you for sharing.

This is AWESOME! I’m not only obsessed with fonts myself, but I know my kiddos would love it! I got the Handwriting Without Tears app, but I can’t seem to find the font creator part of it. Is it a different app? Or an in-app purchase?
    Thanks!!
