Winner, Math Tubs, and a Freebie

Hold the phone.

Blogging two days in a row…

Who am I?!?

I guess it’s because we have been doing so many great things (and I have actually been remembering to take pictures…) that I just have to put down the wine glass fabulous book I’m reading to post about it.

First of all, congrats to Debbie Eccles for winning the Fairy Tale unit! If you aren’t Debbie, then you can always grab it during the big sale!

This is kind of a weird time in math. We have introduced most of the basic concepts, but now it’s time to go back to review and see what they have actually absorbed. We have been doing a lot of word problems, we started talking about equations (yikes), and they are still working on mastering their basic addition and subtraction facts.

Last year, I made the decision to start doing math tubs rotating students like we do for literacy stations. I dipped my toe in it last year. We didn’t do them every day. This year, we are full on math tubs every day. The kids love them and I can’t disappoint.

Base ten is always going to be a skill that we can build on. I love these pocket dice because they are interchangeable. I have used them in math tubs and literacy stations since the beginning of the year. For this tub, students roll the dice and count the tens and ones. There is a corresponding picture on the dice and recording page.

Who can resist a color by code?

Kidding.

However, this one is a mix of addion and subtraction. This is our first go at trying to decipher addition and subtraction signs together. I don’t know what is up with this crayon hand grip…but it’s something like this.

Another tub that they had was an addition/subtraction “clip it”. It makes it a little more fun with the pom-poms hot glued on the edge. There was also a recording page to go along with this activity, but I think I am going to take it out for tomorrow. This one took the longest. As you can see, they are still working on taking notice if it’s an addition problem or subtraction problem 🙂 You could do the two activities separately.

While most of the students can name the 2-D and 3-D shapes, it’s still hard for them to wrap their minds around the concept of the shape being flat and solid and understanding the difference. I have these shape matching cards from lakeshore. The students matched them up and then drew and labled one of the pictures they matched. Then, they had to check next to flat or solid.

I know a lot of us like the “Roll and Cover”, but I think they were getting a little bored with the regular roll and cover so I came up with a “Roll and Cover” plus 2 and plus 3. This is the perfect activity to start practicing mental math.

    • I was just thinking the same thing! I have been the worst commenting and checking in with everyone. I guess it’s just that time of the year 🙂 Hugs back lady!
